Diamond Certificate Award - South Service Drive Infrastructure Project
American Council of Engineering Companies Pennsylvania Chapter (ACEC/PA) - 2008

Pennoni Associates has received the 2008 Diamond Certificate Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies Pennsylvania Chapter (ACEC/PA) for its work on the South Service Drive Infrastructure Project in Philadelphia, PA. The ACEC/PA Diamond Awards recognize the contributions of Pennsylvania consulting engineering firms for enhancing the social and economical impact of the Commonwealth and its citizens.

Pennoni provided site design services to three locations along South Service Drive in Philadelphia, an area that is being developed into what will become one of the premier research and ambulatory care centers in the country.

South Service Drive runs along a strip of properties owned by the University of Pennsylvania (Penn), Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), and the University of Pennsylvania Health Systems (UPHS) which are being expanded upon to strengthen the reach and increase the capabilities of these reputable institutions. Located in the University City section of Philadelphia, these institutions are recognized across the nation as leaders in their respective fields. Penn consistently ranks in the top 10 in U.S. and World Reports list of the best universities in the country. CHOP is consistently considered one of the best hospitals for children in the country. UPHS ranks second in the nation in terms of total research awards to academic medical schools in the US.

All three clients were developing new buildings including research facilities, ambulatory care centers, and one of the country’s few proton therapy centers for cancer research, which posed a challenge as they are all located in a dense urban area. Pennoni was able to work with all interested parties to provide a design that will support infrastructure for seven million square feet of development that may be a place where a cure to a child's disease is discovered, or advancement in cancer treatment is made. The work done in these new facilities will not only help Philadelphia and the surrounding community, but it will help sick children and individuals around the country.

GIS

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are systems of hardware and software used for storage, retrieval, mapping, data, and analysis of geographic data.  Spatial features are stored in a coordinate system (latitude/longitude, state plane, UTM, etc.), which references a particular place on the earth.  When this data and maps are placed onto the project, all subjects line up to their true location on the earth’s surface, relieving the operator from trying to overlay all the maps and data by estimated scale, rotation, and rubber-sheeting.

GIS differs from CAD (Computer Aided Modeling) by creating data on each spatial feature (line, point, polygon).  Instead of having a symbol for a fire hydrant symbol and a label in CAD, you can click on the symbol and retrieve useful information such as digital photographs, maintenance reports, date of installation, flow rates, coordinates, date of survey, field book, and manufacturer.  With the wealth of data on one point, queries can then be run to create new mapping, such as showing only hydrants installed after 1970, and within 500 feet of hospitals.  For example, this map can then be overlaid with insurance databases to determine current rates of insurance premiums paid by hospitals that are located close to fire hydrants.

Pennoni’s GIS experts work with many industries to compile and create GIS maps and databases to the requested specifications.  Please contact us to find out how we may help you create a system for your needs.

Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals

One of the largest industries in the world is healthcare, responding to the needs of millions of people worldwide.  The United States is at the forefront of this global industry, leading the way in many fields of clinical research, training, and practice.  As in so many other industries, the contributions of engineers help to advance healthcare facilities.  Our multi-discipline, vertical approach to healthcare engineering allows us to take healthcare projects from conception to completion.  Pennoni Associates offers an integrated project delivery approach and practices cost effective methods to assist our healthcare clients in meeting their specific project requirements.

The engineering design of hospitals is completed using a synergistic systems approach by Pennoni; from the engineers who perform the traffic studies in the area assuring the most accessible route in an emergency to the engineers who design and inspect the MEP systems, we all take responsibility for creating an environment for the best possible medical care.

Engineers involved in the pharmaceutical industry are involved in the conception, design, construction, and operation of research facilities and manufacturing plants.  In addition to some of the more obvious services that an engineer offers, they help to maintain a level of personal and environmental safety, through testing and inspection of the facility.

Structural

Every building project starts with a vision.  Whether it is new construction, an addition, adaptive re-use, a renovation or a repair, the developer or owner has a vision for their project.  The architect takes that vision and develops a concept to realize the vision. The architect relies on the structural engineer to provide expertise in the form of technical design as well as sound advice in order to bring that concept into reality.

For more than four decades, Pennoni Associates has provided structural engineering services to a diverse client base in markets including commercial, industrial, educational, entertainment, hospitality, institutional, residential, and recreational. Pennoni has built a reputation for understanding our clients’ needs and for producing innovative, cost-effective and efficient design.  As a dedicated professional engineering consulting firm, Pennoni consistently meets the demands of our clients and the ever-changing and complex structural code requirements.  Pennoni engineers have a solid reputation for responsive, high-quality structural engineering services.  Our team consists of experienced structural engineers, designers, and CADD technicians who support our clients and develop technically sound solutions.
