Merit Award- Trenton World War II Memorial
American Concrete Institute's (ACI) NJ Chapter - 2009

Pennoni's World War II Memorial project, located in Trenton, NJ, recently received a Merit Award from the NJ Chapter of the American Concrete Institute. This $5.5 million project symbolically encompasses the greatness, grace and courage of the WWII generation.

Six service markers and two arching story walls, encircle the central sculpture. Each service marker bares a seal that represents the six branches of the military and the respective NJ Medal of Honor recipients. The story walls communicate the history of the war effort through stories told by local veterans and a timeline of actual WWII events. Located along an outer circle are four bas reliefs, depicting battle scenes from both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. A soldier in an active combat pose and a lone battlefield marker also are highlighted in the Memorial.

As a sub-consultant to Landscape Architectural firm DHM Design and working with the general contractor, Neshaminy Constructors Inc., Pennoni provided construction management/construction inspection (CM/CI) and environmental engineering services for the construction of the Memorial, which was commissioned by the New Jersey Department of Military & Veterans Affairs (DMAVA) and the New Jersey Department of Property Management and Construction (DPMC).

Traditional Power Plants

Traditional power plants are classified based on the type of energy product they are producing.  The common types are:

  • Electrical generation
  • Steam generation
  • Cogeneration or combined electrical and steam production

The plants are also classified by the type of fuel used to generate the electricity/steam product.  They are:

  • Coal fired
  • Natural gas fired
  • Petroleum fired
  • Nuclear fired

These plants provide electricity and/or steam to municipalities, homes, business and industrial facilities.  In all cases, the primary technology is to convert water into steam.  The steam can then be delivered to the user as is or be used to power a turbine to generate electricity.  In all types of plants the major issues are:

  • Water quantity, quality and wastewater discharge
  • Cooling water quantity, quality and wastewater discharge
  • Air emissions
  • Nuclear by-products generation and handling in nuclear power plants

With the increased demand and environmental pressures facing the traditional power industry at this time, the need for enhanced designs, improved and more efficient operations and greater attention to all aspects of permitting and environmental issues has never been greater.  In order to meet the present and future challenges faced by the traditional power industry, Pennoni Associates has the background and experience to address most of the needs of the industry.  From site plan development to infrastructure design, environmental impact, water, wastewater and air emission permitting for new facilities to plant process audits, facility upgrade designs and implementation, design and upgrade of existing boiler water, cooling water and wastewater treatment systems, Pennoni Associates has demonstrated the unique ability to tailor their service package to our clients custom needs.

Solid and Hazardous Waste Management

It has been estimated that Americans generate trash at an astonishing rate of four pounds per day per person, which translates to 600,000 tons per day or 210 million tons per year.  In an effort to accommodate the amount of waste Americans produce daily, municipalities and private sector companies across the country have begun to build and rehabilitate landfills. As a premiere consulting engineering firm in the region, Pennoni Associates has worked on various landfill projects throughout the Mid Atlantic Region. From environmental impact studies to rehabilitation and re-use, Pennoni’s team of experts helps clients provide disposal of waste in the safest and most sanitary manner possible.
