RSS is an abbreviation for Really Simple Syndication. It is a standardized method of marking or tagging text, audio or video files for Web syndication, so that RSS readers or aggregators can access the information. RSS also stands for Rich Site Summary, and RDF Site Summary.

A reader, aggregator or news aggregator is software that retrieves syndicated Web content supplied in the form of a web feed (for example, RSS) that is published by weblogs, podcasts and websites. Simply, it is a program that can read an RSS file, feed or channel. The terms file, feed and channel are used interchangeably.
